At our April meeting, we were delighted to welcome our Cancer Care Coordinator from Island City Practice, to find out more about the role and how it can help people living with and after cancer. Many GPs’ surgeries across the area now have people working in this role, so it is worth checking with your local practice to find out if they have one.
Cancer Care Coordinators can help patients to navigate the system at a very stressful time and be a consistent point of contact. This can be especially helpful for people in ongoing treatment, or coming to the end of treatment and having the majority of their care transferred from hospital to primary care (GPs). They can also be a useful point of contact if you are starting a phased return back to work, or need to find out about accessing specific types of support.
