This week we had a visit from Joleen, our local knitter from Knitted Knockers. Knitted Knockers UK is a charity that provides knitted and crocheted breast prostheses for women in the UK who have undergone a mastectomy or lumpectomy.
We are very fortunate in Portsmouth to be well supported by the Breast Unit at Queen Alexandra Hospital, which provides high quality breast prostheses through the NHS. However, everyone has different needs after breast surgery, and Knitted Knockers provide a comfortable, lightweight, breathable alternative to silicone prostheses. The knockers are soft against the skin and may be particularly suitable for people who have recently had surgery, or who find silicone prostheses too heavy.
We were particularly interested to see the ‘aqua knocker’ which doesn’t hold water and is good for swimwear. We also liked the way the knockers can be customised for different types of surgery, for example to pad out areas of the breast after a lumpectomy. You can choose a knocker with or without a nipple, and even choose a colour that suits you!
Knockers can be ordered free from the Knitted Knockers website
